The quake hit 81 miles (130 kilometres) north northwest of Moyobamba and 480 miles (775 km) north of Lima. It was relatively deep at 78 miles (125.6 km). A 24-year-old Arab American from Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the 2010 Miss USA title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown. Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills.When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, “Ask me after I’ve had a pizza.” Fakih, a Lebanese immigrant, told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. Archeologists said Tuesday they have uncovered a 14th-century aqueduct that supplied water to Jerusalem for almost 600 years along a route dating back to the time of Jesus — but unlike most such finds, this time the experts knew exactly where to look. Photographs from the late 19th century showed the aqueduct in use by the city’s Ottoman rulers, nearly 600 years after its construction in 1320. The photo shows an inscription dating back to the aqueduct’s early days. It was uncovered during repairs to the city’s modern-day water system. Public works projects here proceed in cooperation with antiquities officials in a city where turning over a shovel of dirt anywhere can turn back the pages of time, said Yehiel Zelinger, the archeologist in charge of the excavation. Space shuttle Atlantis is set to blast off on its final flight next week. NASA’s top managers agreed Wednesday to set May 14 as the launch date. Liftoff would be at 2:20 p.m. Atlantis will fly to the International Space Station, carrying up a crew of six and a load of supplies. Much of that is crammed inside a Russian-built module that will be attached permanently to the orbiting lab complex.
